Chilean Carabineros Yatagan 1908
€ 175,00
The Chilean Carabineros Yatagan 1908 is a bayonet that was specially made for the Policías Fiscales (Fiscal Police) of Chile. Although it is called a "bayonet," it was never intended to be mounted on a rifle; it served as a ceremonial and functional ornamental weapon for the mounted police.
Production and "Recycled" Design
These bayonets were produced by the German firm Alex Coppel from Solingen. The design is unique because it made use of surplus French weapons:
- Blade & Guard: The "T-shaped" blade and guard from the French M1874 Gras bayonet were used.
- Modifications: The original blade was shortened to approximately 29 cm. The adjustment screw of the barrel ring was usually ground smooth because the bayonet no longer needed to fit on a rifle.
- The Hilt: A new, solid brass handle was added, featuring the Chilean national coat of arms.
Identification Mark
On an authentic example, you may find the following marking:
- Serial Number: Usually, a serial number (e.g., "E85") is stamped into the pommel or the guard.
The Scabbard
The scabbards are also modified French originals made of blued steel, shortened to the correct length and finished with a brass fitting at the end and a brass carrying knob.
